September 1942 at Bromley High School for Girls GPDST: my first Latin lesson and we had a new young teacher, Miss Dewar, fresh from Cambridge University.  She was lively and quite jolly . She would enter the room with a smile and we would rise to greet her with 'Salve O Magister', (Hail O Teacher)  I loved her lessons. They were sometimes interrupted by a loud air raid siren and  we would hurry down into the shelter under the school playground . When bombing began we sang folk songs and sea shanties.  We  hurried home afterwards but the staff would stay on  to fire watch in turns.
The bombing would start again in the early evening nearly every night so we  tried to sleep in shelters in our gardens . The noise   was terrible.  There was the drone of heavy bombers overhead,  the sound of bombs  whistling past us and exploding nearby  and loud bursts of gunfire. We did not get much sleep.  It is a wonder that we learnt anything at all, but we did.
